El Naturalista donated 3,500 pairs of shoes to protect the feet of those who have lost everything trying to help them to continue walking through life (Caminar por la vida) with hope.
We have also begun to work with organizations that have experience and expertise in Haiti to support the reconstruction of the country.
On January 12, 2010 the lives of thousands of Haitians changed. An earthquake triggered one of the worst human disasters in recent memory. The effects of the earthquake have been devastating for Haiti and reconstructing a country that has lost everything will be very difficult.
This disaster has affected the entire world. Governments have reacted with urgency. Non-Profit Organizations, firefighters, doctors, nurses, and many individuals have travelled to Haiti to help.
The Atauchi Project, created to provide humanitarian aid, wanted to be part of the relief effort in Haiti.
With the involvement of all members of the “Frog Family, El Naturalista, through its humanitarian arm, the Atauchi Project, has been able to deliver its first donation of shoes. On February 11th, an Air Europe plane departed from Madrid bound to Haiti carrying 500 pairs of shoes to be delivered to two Non-Profit Organizations with a long standing presence in Haiti: Acoger y Compartir and the Congregation of Daughters of Charity. This effort was made possible by collaboration with members of Madrid Rumbo al Sur: Telmo Aldaz de la Quadra-Salcedo, Program Director, and José Luís Cuesta, photo-journalist.
Telmo Aldaz, who leads Madrid Rumbo al Sur, a project dedicated to youth awareness and social cooperation, has traveled to Haiti to assist in the reconstruction of the country.
He and members of his team delivered the 500 pairs of shoes sent by El Naturalista. Two hundred fifty pairs were allocated to the families and orphans of St. Gerard School in Port au Prince. This school, where 300 children were killed by the earthquake, is administered by the Non-Profit Organization Acoger y Compartir. The remaining 250 pairs were delivered to the Missionary Daughters of Charity who work in Cite Soleil, serving more that 1,500 people in a medical clinic and in a school every day. Both of these institutions were almost completely destroyed by the earthquake.
In addition, El Naturalista has made a second shipment of shoes, this time by sea. A container with 3,000 pairs of shoes was sent on February 22, 2010 to Soles4Souls to be distributed to the people affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Soles4Souls is an organization dedicated to collecting footwear from manufacturers to distribute to those in need.
Haiti is a country where a lot of work remains to be done.
Haiti will need to reconstruct itself with international aid. The Atauchi Project has begun work to help in that reconstruction and El Naturalista will allocate funds to continue helping in the future.
